Furious couple vow never to return to Hull over 'unfair' £60 bus lane fine

A couple up in arms after being slapped with a fine for using a bus lane in a north England city have sworn they will never return.

Carl Madison, 58, said he would not come to shop in Hull ever again after receiving the fine for driving through Carr Lane bus gate last month.

He had ended up in the bus lane due to roadworks along the A63, he claims.

Carl said being hit with the fine as a person not local to Hull was "unfair" and left a “bitter taste” in his mouth.

Speaking to Hull Live , Carl said: "We came into Hull on the Clive Sullivan Way, the A63.

"We were going to Princes Quay car park but the normal turn off was blocked off because of roadworks.

"So we took the next turn off the A63 and ended up down the bus gate."

Carl and his partner, Jan Allison, visited the city on the morning of October 22.

The roadworks he referred to were part of the ongoing A63 Castle Junction improvements. Carl claimed they saw a number of cars that day going the same route because of the roadworks.

The couple, from Market Rasen, received a £60 penalty notice in the post five days later.

Mr Maddison said the roadworks made it unclear how drivers were meant to get to the Princes Quay car park, without turning down that road.

They were able to halve the fine to £30 by early payment, though Carl Maddison hoped for its full reversal.

"If you don't live in Hull, how would you know about this?" he asked.

"If you were following the bus, you would not even see the small sign for the Bus Gate.

"It's not a loss to me because I won't shop there ever again. I've told people at work and it will put colleagues off too."

A Hull City Council spokesman said: "Clear signage and road markings are in place advising motorists of bus lane enforcements, including at the entry points of the Carr Lane bus gate.

"There are no roadworks around the Carr Lane bus gate that would obscure this signage.

"Motorists have the right to appeal a bus lane penalty charge notice (PCN) if they feel it has been issued incorrectly.

"Full details of how to appeal are given on the PCN."

Carl said: "In the position I was in without local knowledge, how was I supposed to get to the car park without going down Carr Lane?

"I have now put too much time and effort into all of this. I will never win.

"You have an outstanding city. But I will never ever be giving it any business ever again."
