Furious British Airways staff complain after finding out jobs could be 'suspended' on social media

Shocked BA staff woke up this morning to find news on social media saying that they may be getting "suspended"

BBC news broke the story this morning, that British Airways are expected to "suspend 36,000 staff" amid the coronavirus outbreak.

British Airways staff were left stunned by the revelation, with many confirming they had been left in the dark about the company talks.

One man also messaged Edinburgh Live to say that he also found out via BBC News, after being told to go home and wait for a call that "never came".

One local woman from Edinburgh shared the BBC article writing: "What a fab way to find out -via the news."

She was not alone, with many other workers confirming it was the first they had heard of any "suspensions."

Another worker, who also recently had to cancel their wedding due to coronavirus, tweeted: "It would be nice if the staff were actually told this by their employer and not have to find out by reading it on Twitter."

Another furious member of staff wrote: "BBC got the scoop before us again."

The BBC published their story at around 10am on 2 April.

The article confirmed that BA had been negotiating with the Unite union for more than a week.

The BBC also revealed that: "the two sides have reached a broad deal but are yet to sign on some details.'

The agreement means that up to 80% of BA cabin crew, ground staff, engineers and those working at head office will have their jobs suspended but no staff are expected to be made redundant.

The decision affects staff at Gatwick and London City Airport.

Staff who are furloughed by their company will still receive some wages through the government's coronavirus job retention scheme, which covers 80% of someone's salary capped at a maximum of £2,500 a month.

Edinburgh Live reached out to BA for comment who said: "Talks continue."
