Funeral set for Glen Ellyn college student who died after fall in Rome

April 09--Funeral arrangements have been set for a University of Iowa student from Glen Ellyn who died this week after being injured overseas.

Andrew Mogni, 20, died Sunday, about three months after he was hurt in a fall in Rome. University officials said Mogni, a third-year finance major in Rome for a study abroad program, may have been the victim of a robbery when he was hurt in January. Police are still investigating.

Mogni remained in a coma and received medical treatment in Rome until he was cleared to return to the Chicago area in late March. He was transferred via air ambulance to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Mogni's wake is scheduled for 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Williams-Kampp Funeral Home in Wheaton. His funeral Mass is planned for 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Petronille Church in Glen Ellyn.

Mogni was born in Maywood and grew up in Glen Ellyn, according to his obituary. He graduated from Benet Academy in Lisle. He also was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity at the college.

Mogni is survived by his parents, Benjamin and Theresa, and two brothers, Benjamin and Stephen. His family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the Muscular Dystrophy Association in Chicago. Mogni volunteered at a summer camp for children with the disease for several years, according to the organization. A special fund has been set up in Mogni's name.

"Over the past 5 years, Andrew has dedicated his summers to helping kids with muscular dystrophy," the organization wrote on the donation Web page. "We were so blessed to have him in our MDA family. He was able to touch the lives of so many."

"It is an exhausting week for the volunteers but it was the one week of his summer that Andrew looked forward to and gladly gave his time and energy to," University of Iowa officials said on the school's website. "Donations are also used to fund families that can't afford the cost of camp. MDA and its campers was very near and dear to Andrew's heart."
