Funeral services Thursday for Mark S. Allen, Chicago community activist

Funeral services are planned Thursday for Chicago activist Mark S. Allen.

Mr. Allen, 58, was a former field director for the Rainbow PUSH Coalition and member of Kappa Alpha Psi.

He died Sept. 12. He was found unresponsive at his Black Wall Street USA office, a nonprofit promoting minority businesses and entrepreneurship.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rainbow PUSH’s founder, tweeted condolences. The Rev. Al Sharpton called him a “true freedom fighter and grassroots organizer.” Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx tweeted praise for his “lifting up and empowering the Black community.”

Mr. Allen went to Chicago Vocational High School and Western Illinois University.

Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday at the House of Hope, 752 E. 114th St., with the funeral there at 11 a.m.
