Funeral of tragic teen Jay set as family thank supporters

The mum of a teenage school boy who died after being knocked off his bike by a bus has issued her heartfelt thanks to the community.

Jay Gallacher’s family say they have been "overwhelmed" by the generosity and kindness shown to them since losing their beloved son on June 5.

The 15-year-old suffered fatal injuries after being knocked down while riding his bicycle in Harthill.

His relatives previously told how the popular S4 Calderhead High pupil had a "heart of gold" and a "cheeky smile that would light up a room".

A fundraiser was launched to help the family plan a memorial for young Jay, who will be laid to rest this Monday.

In a touching statement issued via the Harthill Community Facebook page, mum Ann said: “I just want to say a huge thank you to each and every one of you who have messaged, sent cards, and even hugged me when I really needed it.

“Also, the generosity has been well and truly overwhelming to us all as a family, from my own family, friends, residents from my home town and even strangers, and I can’t thank you all enough.

“I’d like to share with you all that the total to date raised via the Go Fund Me page has been an outstanding total of £4845.34 (after fees).

“Jay is very much missed and I still can’t believe what’s happened. Our family will never be the same. So once again I thank you all.”

Following Jay’s tragic death, John Robertson, headteacher of Calderhead High School, said: “Jay was a lovely pupil and we are all devastated by this tragic news.

“Jay was in S4 and had just finished his Nat 5 assessments in all seven subjects and was about to make his course choices for S5 this week. He was proud of his achievements and had a bright future ahead of him.

“He will be missed by everyone who knew him and our thoughts are with his friends and family. We will provide our full support to pupils and staff in the days and weeks ahead.”
