Funeral details for tragic Cork boy Avery James Greene, 3, who died in Spain announced

A funeral for a tragic little boy who died in Spain last week will be held this evening.

Avery James Greene, from Mallow in Cork, was on holidays with his mother, his two sisters and their grandparents last week when the tragedy occurred.

The family were on vacation in the Cabo Roig area around 10km from Torreivieja on the Costa Blanca.

The three-year-old, who is the youngest in a family of three, got into difficulty at the Aquamarina urbanisation pool in Oriheula last Monday.

He was discovered unconscious in the communal swimming pool by an early morning bather.

Paramedics did everything in their power to assist the child and he was rushed to Alicante General Hospital unconscious.

Avery responded after CPR and his vital signs were restored but he later died surrounded by his family.

A GoFundMe set up by a family friend has raised over €33,000 for the family to bring his body home for his funeral, RSVP Live reports.

Steve O'Herlihy, who organised the fundraiser, said: "It has been an absolutely heartbreaking week for the family of beautiful little Avery Greene.

"To grieve the loss of their little one following this tragic accident is difficult enough without the added financial pressure the family is now facing in bringing their boy home.

"Funds raised will go towards helping to alleviate the huge financial burden of medical costs involved, as well as facilitating the final journey home for Avery and his family.

"Any additional funds raised will be donated to the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust, who have been an invaluable support during this time."

Avery will lie in repose at O'Connell's Funeral Home, St. James' Avenue, Mallow on Friday evening from 3pm with prayers at 7.45pm, followed by removal to St. Mary's Church, Mallow for Mass of the Angels at 8.30pm.

A private cremation will be held at request of the family.

Family flowers only, donations if desired, may be made to the Kevin Bell Repatriation Fund.
