Funeral details for Tipperary Independent candidate Marese Skehan announced

A Tipperary election candidate who died earlier this week will be laid to rest on Thursday.

Marese Skehan, who was running as an Independent, passed away at her home on Cabra Road in Thurles on Monday morning.

The home help co-ordinator, who was aged in her 60s, was well known in the local area as a strong women's rights advocate.

Polling in Tipperary has been suspended as a result, in accordance with section 62 of the Electoral Act 1992.

A death notice on RIP.ie reads:"Predeceased by her parents Liam and Mai. Deeply regretted by her loving family; brothers Jim, Gerard and Fr William, sisters Hilary, Kay and Michelle, nephews, nieces, grandnephew, sisters-in-law Margaret and Betty, brothers-in-law Sean and Liam, aunt Phillis, cousins, neighbours and many friends.

A wake will be held in Hugh Ryan's Funeral Home, Slievenamon Road, Thurles on Wednesday, February 5, from 5pm to 7pm.

A funeral will be take place on Thursday, February 6, in Hugh Ryan's Funeral Home at 10am with burial afterwards in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Thurles.

Family flowers only, donations if desired may be made to Thurles Meals on Wheels.

Tributes have been flooding in for the late Ms Skehan since news of her death broke.

Labour spokesperson on health Alan Kelly said: "Firstly I wish to offer my deepest sympathies to Marese’s family and all who knew her.

“The news of Marese’s death has been a huge shock to the people of Tipperary."

Deputy Michael Lowry also paid tribute to the late candidate.

He said: "I have known Marese for many years. She cared passionately about the plight of the underprivileged and disadvantaged and was always a great source of support and assistance to those in need.
