Church services suspended in Scotland amid coronavirus pandemic

Church services across Scotland are to be suspended in an effort to reduce the spread of the coronavirus.

The news follows funeral and cremation advice issued by Glasgow City Council that hymn books be removed from chapels and mourners attending services at council cemeteries or crematoria avoid shaking hands to prevent the spread of the virus.

Advice published on the Council’s website also reveals efforts are being made to sanitise cremation chapels after each service.

No restrictions have been placed on access to cemeteries and crematoria but the authority is required to follow Scottish Government guidance on gatherings of more than 500 people.

The Catholic Church in Scotland have announced that churches will remain open for personal prayer following the suspension of mass, which takes effect from Thursday.

A statement from the Catholic Church reads: "Churches will remain open for personal prayer and parish priests are encouraged to welcome individuals who seek consolation and encouragement from the Lord.

"Priests are also asked to be available for the reception of the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick and Holy Communion as and when they are needed especially for the sick and housebound".

The Church of Scotland have also confirmed that churches will be kept open as a place for people to come and pray, while asking that visitors "observe robust hand hygiene".

In respect of funerals, they have noted that "sensitive conversations will need to take place with families and mourners ahead of funeral ceremonies, and to consider the size of groups gathering for funerals".

With the possibility that it may be necessary in the future to consider whether funerals should be restricted exclusively to minister, immediate family, and funeral directors.

The suspension of services by The Church of Scotland came into effect last night.
