Funds to repair Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford's mural will go to charity

The funds which were raised in order to repair a mural of Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford after it was vandalised will now be given to charity.

Thugs defaced the mural after Rashford missed a penalty in England final shoot-out against Italy at Euro 2020.

But thousands rallied behind the Manchester United forward in the aftermath and a crowd-funder was started in order to raise money to repair the mural.

Just under £40,000 was raised in two weeks with thousands donating to the cause.

However, Rashford has now asked the money to be given to a food poverty charity, Fareshare.

Speaking about the decision Rashford thanked his supporters for standing behind him.

"At one of my lowest points, the outpouring of support around this mural really lifted me and I'm truly grateful for that.

"It reinforced my belief in the strength of community and the endless pictures being shared of visit left me feeling really overwhelmed. I wanted to capture that feeling and bank it for more people to experience."

"All funds raised in recent weeks, beyond those needed for a repair, protection and preservation for the mural, will be donated to FareShare Greater Manchester to support hunger over the upcoming summer break."

Fareshare is one of the longest food distribution charity in the UK.

Rashford worked alongside the charity last year during Coronavirus in order to help millions of kids get access to school meals during lockdown which ultimately led to a government funded scheme giving access to 1.7 million vulnerable kids.

The messages people left on Rashford's mural in support of the United star have now been removed for future generations to enjoy.
