Funds raised to help grieving family of Glasgow schoolboy who died in River Tay tragedy

A fundraising appeal set up to help the grieving family of a young Glasgow schoolboy who died after getting into difficulty in the River Tay has smashed through its target.

Kayden Walker, 12, passed away in hospital on Tuesday morning after being pulled from the river on Sunday.

Emergency services, including water rescue teams from the fire service, were called into action to try to save the youngster.

He was flown to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow but he tragically lost his fight for life.

Now generous friends, relatives and strangers have rallied together to help cover funeral costs for his family.

Around £1300 has been raised so far in under 24 hours after a £1000 target was set.

Kayden Walker's big brother posted this picture of him with their younger brother Jude (Facebook)

The JustGiving page , set up by Lee Calder, reads: "Hi guys as you know young Kayden was cruelly taken away from us while on a trip with his local church group in a tragic accident.

"I am setting this fund page up to help his family with any costs that may arise from his sudden passing to take the strain and money worries away from them, and to let them focus on being a family".

Tributes poured in on the fundraising page from friends who wanted to share their condolences.

One wrote: "I will always remember that wee cheeky smile! GBNF Kayden".

Another added: "My heart is breaking for all the family. Good night, rest in peace wee man."

A third said: "Rest in peace handsome boy! Thinking of his family at this sad time".

It’s understood Kayden, who has three brothers, was a pupil at St Mungo’s Academy in Bridgeton, Glasgow.

The incident happened on a stretch of the Tay near the village of Stanley in Perthshire .

We previously told how his older brother, Kai Thomson, penned to the youngster who he 'loved with all his heart.'

He wrote: "There’s no words I could say to make this any easier.

"Woke up this morning, done the usual scroll through Facebook and then 5 minutes later I remember the absolute nightmare of the last two nights and it all begins to sink in all over again.

"You really don’t know what’s around the corner and in my mind I still don’t fully believe it all.

"I make this promise to you now Kayden, Jude will always grow up knowing just how much of an amazing big brother he had from both what he remembers and what we will all tell him.

"You're up there with granda now so look after each other. I love you wee man with all my heart. Until we meet again.

"You really were simply the best."
