'Funds for Partey and Aouar!' - Arsenal fans back Edu's reported transfer plan for Martinez

Arsenal fans have been reacting to reports that Emiliano Martinez will be allowed to leave the club this summer.

According to The Athletic, the Gunners are ready to cash in on the 27-year-old as he seeks to establish himself as a first-choice goalkeeper.

Furthermore, the report states that while the ex-head of football Raul Sanellhi had set an asking price of £20m, Martinez hopes the north London outfit will halve their valuation to £10m.

Having moved to Arsenal's academy in 2010 after playing in Independiente's youth ranks, Martinez had to wait until last season to finally make his mark in the Gunners' first-team after Bernd Leno suffered an injury.

His impressive form prompted plenty of speculation over his future when Leno returns to fitness.

And now it would appear that technical director Edu and head coach Mikel Arteta have decided that the German international will remain as number one, hence the reason Martinez is likely to be sold.

Speaking about the goalkeeping situation on Thursday, Arteta had a challenge for both Leno and Martinez.

"I'm delighted to have both of them," the Gunners boss said. "But they both know that on the first day of pre-season, you start again and fight for your place and show us who is the one that deserves the chance to start.

"I don’t want to keep them both happy, I want the one that is not playing to be upset.

"But upset and then challenge the next player to make him better, or if not, earn his place to do that. It’s not easy to do that.

"I personally don’t see any different with goalkeepers to full-backs. They know that, I’ve been really clear with them and hopefully they can make each other better and hopefully the team better."

As expected, this reported decision has garnered a big response on social media, with some Arsenal fans backing the plan to sell Martinez - but only if the funds are used to buy either Thomas Partey or Houssem Aouar.

It remains to be seen where Martinez will go if he does leave Arsenal his summer, but his long-term plan is to one day return to Argentina.

"I wanted to play in Independiente’s first team and go to Europe," he told ESPN earlier in the month. "It happened as it happened, I could not say no to Arsenal.

"Going back to Independiente is something that I’ll never rule out, they’re the one that gave me the opportunity to be in Europe.

"But today I cannot assure anything, I want to return with a good level, I wouldn’t do it at 35 without a good level. I see my career on the rise, I can’t confirm it."
