Fundraising page set up after 90-year-old man's wallet containing £2,000 stolen outside Sunderland bank

A fundraising page has been set up to help raise money for a 90-year-old man whose wallet containing £2,000 was stolen outside a bank in Sunderland.

The pensioner was outside of the Virgin Money Bank in Sunderland city centre early on Monday morning when the theft took place.

The suspect rode past the man on a bike and snatched the wallet which contained cards and £2,000 in cash.

He then rode off away from the scene and has not yet been tracked down.

Following the theft, Sunderland woman Daniella Hanson set up a Just Giving page to try and raise £2,000 to replace the money stolen.

Daniella said: "A friend shared the CCTV shot of the man who robbed the elderly man and after numerous people commented about setting up a page to donate I decided to ahead after contacting his daughter.

"I would just like to help where I can. Nobody, especially a man of 90, should fall victim to an awful robbery like that.

"Their generation built our country and I think we have a duty to help as a community.

"I would love to take that burden of the loss away. He must have been terrified bless him and so upset. I would hate to think of my grandad being in that state."

An investigation is under way and now Northumbria Police is asking anyone with information to come forward.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Shortly before 7.40am on Monday we received a report of a theft of a wallet from outside Virgin Money Bank on Fawcett Street, Sunderland.

"The caller states he was taking his bank card out of his wallet when a male on a bike rode past and stole the wallet, containing cards and £2,000 in cash.

"Inquiries are ongoing and anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101 or online, quoting log 168 170820."
