Fundraising begins to buy GP surgery and transform it into community centre

Residents have launched a fundraising campaign as they plough ahead with plans to buy a GP surgery and transform it into a youth centre in Netherfield.

Tina Simpson, treasurer of the Netherfield Forum, which runs the St George's Centre and Loco Youth Centre, needs to raise £230,000 by May.

The team has already managed to raise £30,000 but is calling on the community to hold events and donate so the dream can become a reality.

They hope to buy Netherfield Medical Centre in Forester Street after it relocates to its new site in Meadow Lane on May 2.

It would replace the Loco Youth Centre building in Victoria Road, which they rent from the methodist church and has become "a cash cow for heating and maintenance".

It would be a community hub, but would run more activities for children aged six to 10 to stop them falling on the wrong side of the law when they become teenagers.

It would also be a place for teenagers to hang out with friends offering sofas, pool tables and games consoles to keep them out of trouble.

The building would cost £230,000, but overall it could cost up to £1.5m for associated works to transform the former GP practice into a working youth centre.

Mrs Simpson believes crime would definitely drop in the area with the formation of a new hub for the whole community to enjoy.

A Justgiving page has been launched with more than £800 already raised over the last week.

Mrs Simpson said: "It has been really positive. The young mums have been asking what they can do to help and have been bringing things in to put money towards the centre.

"We have only been live a few days. We need lots of nice donations and we are going to do lots of fund-raising ourselves such as cake stalls and celebrating our 15th anniversary on Tuesday.

"I anticipate six to nine months of fundraising and in the next two years we would like to be having an open day - that is my vision. Every little bit helps - every 10p grows to a £1."

The Justgiving page states: "The Loco centre is a converted Methodist Church which we lease from the Diocese.

"Recent youth drug and alcohol problems, including incidences of knife crime, coupled with new housing developments and changes in the community needs, mean that the Loco centre is now not the the best option for our community.

"We now have a wonderful opportunity to relocate, expand and develop the services currently provided at the Loco centre to the site of the former Medical Centre, immediately adjacent to St George's on Forester Street, Netherfield.

"This will allow children, young people and families to access the existing clubs and activities offered at Loco, as well as extra services.

"These will include Nottinghamshire County Council's children and families service and youth provision, young people's mental health/crisis intervention, sexual health services, youth justice outreach and training and employment services.

"We also plan to develop specific services to reflect the needs of emerging cultural groups in the area."
