Fundraiser set up to repair College Green after thousands gather to hear Greta speak

A fundraiser has been set up to repair College Green after it was turned into a mud bath following the Greta Thunberg rally.

The patch of usually grassy land outside City Hall is now a sea of brown after thousands of people gathered in the wet weather to watch the 17-year-old climate activist speak.

More than 20,000 people are believed to have attended the Bristol Youth Strike 4 Climate event, marching around the city centre.

The cost to repair any damage to the land will fall to Bristol City Council, and therefore the taxpayer.

The authority told Bristol Live it is too early to tell how much damage has been caused to College Green and confirmed it will carry out a visual assessment over the next few days.

Once this assessment has taken place, the council said it will have a much better understanding of what needs to be done and how much it will cost.

But it looks like the council could have some help in covering the costs now a fundraiser has been set up to help pay for any damage caused.

The GoFundMe page has been live for a little more than an hour and has already raised nearly £300.

Pictures of College Green following the rally show the site completely covered in muddy footprints and barely and greenery in sight.

However it does look like those in attendance were careful not to damage any of the flowers planted on the green.

Images shared on social media of the aftermath on College Green show small sections of flower beds left completely intact surrounded by brown mud.

Teenager Greta Today arrived at Temple Meads just after 8.30am this morning after catching the train from London.

She was greeted by fans outside the Bristol station before getting in to a red Nissan Leaf to make her way to College Green with a police escort.

She spoke exclusively to Bristol Live as she got off the train at Temple Meads.
