Fundraiser set up for former Glasgow Uni scientist fighting for his life in Mexico

A fundraiser has been set up to help pay for life-saving treatment for a former Glasgow University scientist who is in critical condition in hospital in Mexico.

Tropical diseases scientist Hector Diaz Albiteris is currently in a medically-induced coma and on dialysis after he developed acute pancreatitis, fluid in his lungs and an Acute Kidney Injury. He had a cardiac arrest, needed chest compressions and required intubation.

Hector had moved to the Tobasco region of Mexico in 2018 with wife Morvyn to fulfil his dream of being an investigative scientist in his home country after previously working at the University of Glasgow and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.

The fundraiser notes that he became seriously unwell on January 27, and despite arriving at the public hospital, was unable to receive treatment due to a lack of bed space - meaning Hector had to be admitted to a private hospital.

Hector's health insurance, through his work, provides only up to one million Mexican pesos coverage (just over £35k), but the gravity of his illness means that this will only last about a week in intensive care.

As a result, Hector desperately needs help to pay for his continued treatment if he is to have a chance of surviving.

To date over £55,000 has been raised from a target of £100,000.
