Fundraiser set up for cafe vandalised during Bristol riots

A fundraiser set up for an independent café vandalised during Sunday's protests has left the owner 'emotional'.

25a Old Market was damaged by a single rioter when the first Kill the Bill protest, which started 'peacefully', became violent on Sunday (March 21).

Pictures show that 25a Old Market, a café and deli on 25a Old Market Street, had windows smashed and stock damaged.

Claire Moyne, owner of the café, spoke of the extent of the damage.

"The window was completely shattered and all the products on our display platform were smashed.

"Everything that came off the display went downstairs including bits of glass.

"Sentimental things were damaged too like pictures and vases."

Having seen images uploaded to Instagram of the damage done to the café, Bristol-based food blogger Riley King decided to set up a Go Fund Me page to help the business.

She told BristolLive: “I set up the page because when I was sat at home on Sunday watching live clips of the riots, I was outraged.

“The damage that was seen in those videos was bad enough, but seeing independent businesses who are probably already struggling due to the pandemic being vandalised too, tipped me over the edge.

“I have a group chat with some other Bristol food bloggers, and put forward the idea to them.

“Everyone agreed it would be great for them and the rest is history. We’ve now raised £1.2k in less than 24 hours.”

Locals have rallied round the business, donating and leaving encouraging comments.

One said: “Your business should never have suffered like this, here’s hoping this small amount can go a little way to helping put right the damage done.

“But more importantly show the heart of true Bristolians & the love we have for our local businesses.”

Ms Moyne says she feels 'emotional' that someone she doesn't know would do such a nice thing.

"The support has been unbelievable, it's blown my mind," she said.

"The Go Fund Me page has now raised £1.3k which will help massively, and there's lots of people behind the scenes helping too."

"Everyone has rallied round, it's been a real community spirit.

"When [the events on] Sunday happened, it shocked a lot of people.

"But this shows Bristol at its best."
