Fundraiser launched for Glasgow primary school after vandals cause £2k of damage

A primary school in Kirkintilloch has been blighted by vandals who have caused up to £2000 damage.

Parents of Gartconner Primary school launched a fundraiser after yet another weekend of wreckage committed by local vandals - although they say the problem has been around for the past year.

Benches have been destroyed in the playground, outdoor equipment in the children's play area has been damaged and stolen and windows have been smashed.

So far, the fundraiser is halfway to its £3000 target, having raised over £1500 already - but parents are concerned that the vandalism will continue on.

Julie Houston, who has two children at the Primary school, told Glasgow Live: "We are trying to raise as many funds as possible help support Gartconner primary school following damage to outdoor play equipment.

"After just getting back to some normality after a year of disruptions, vandals have caused approximating £2000 pounds worth of damage to the school and nursery playgrounds over the last year and a half.

The Parent-Teachers association has said another weekend of vandalism has caused £2k worth damage (PTA)

"More vandalism over last weekend which has resulted in benches been destroyed, play equipment broken or stolen, windows smashed, the astroturf and school garden vandalised.

"After speaking with the police it's looking that the culprits won't be identified - I think they're only young too, and they're bored, but it's no excuse.

"Our children are in bubbles now so can only play with certain classes, and this is just another thing that affects what they can and can't do.

"The school fund can only stretch so far, so we are hopeful we can raise as much as possible for our kids to be able to enjoy their playtime again. They deserve this now more than ever before. It's so unfair on them."

The headteacher for Gartconner Primary School and East Dunbartonshire Council have been contacted for comment.
