Funding for Keith Hospital hanging in the balance

Despite the end of the financial year fast approaching, a decision on Keith and District Hospital's funding model is yet to be confirmed.

The future of the Keith and District Hospital in the state's South East remains a mystery, with a decision on the facility's funding model yet to be confirmed.

The ABC understands the hospital board met with the South Australian Premier last week, but the Limestone Coast Local Health Network says service planning is ongoing.

Grant King, the chair of the LHN governing board, said the body was still working through what a new agreement for the private facility might look like.

"We are in the process now of identifying what is the appropriate level of funding to provide the right level of support to the Keith community," he said.

Despite the end of the financial year fast approaching, Mr King said a decision is still months away.

"I'm suggesting that over the next three months that work will be substantially concluded," he said.

"Probably at that point in time, it may be time to discuss what a new funding proposal longer-term might look like."

'Not good enough'

In April 2019 the facility was thrown a $140,000 lifeline to continue to provide services.

Mr King said there had been three reports into the hospital's operational activities and services over recent years.

"They all show that it's difficult, long term, to maintain a particular level of service for the money available," he said.

Shadow Health Minister Chris Picton said he was shocked that a decision had not been made.

"There was a decision made to bring forward funding from this year to that year of the budget, to enable it to continue to operate," Mr Picton said.

"But that was clearly not a long-term solution to the issues there, and they were promised work was going to be underway to address this."

He said it was frustrating and disappointing for the Keith community.

"The hospital still doesn't have any funding certainty and still doesn't have the certainty it needs to enable the continuation of that vital service," he said.

Mr Picton says while the hospital is a private facility, it is needed for "public good".

"This is not just for residents of Keith, but for people who use the highway," he said.

"It provides a public good for people who need it in that area, particularly people who might be travelling through and have, tragically, a car accident or collision, and they need those emergency services.

"I think [the State Government] need to get their skates on and work with the Keith Hospital Board and community.

"This has been going on for 15 months, and it's not good enough that people should have to wait another three months to find out the situation."
