Fewer than half of all trains to Newcastle on one of the key lines arrived on time last year.
Just 41% of LNER trains on the East Coast Line arrived on time - or within a minute of their scheduled time - at Central Station.
The national average across all companies is 69.4%.
The figures, released by the Office of Rail and Road, has sparked a call for urgent investment in the East Coast Mainline route.
"Late and cancelled trains hurt our region’s economy - not to mention the impact on commuters’ lives," said Catherine McKinnell , MP for Newcastle North.
She has established the All-Party Parliamentary Group on the East Coast Main Line (ECML) to campaign for not only investment but also shorter journey times.
"These figures demonstrate just how far LNER trains serving Newcastle still lag behind the rest of the country on punctuality," she added
"We know this is not a new problem, but - despite being one of the country’s most important strategic transport routes - the East Coast Main Line has not seen any significant programme of investment in its infrastructure for almost 30 years.
"The Government must finally step up and accept its responsibility for the continued delays and disruption caused by decades of underinvestment, and deliver the East Coast Main Line the communities along its route need and deserve."
ChronicleLive approached LNER for comment over the figures, which for Newcastle Central Station, fell by 1.5% on the same period the previous year.
