Fun Home film: Jake Gyllenhaal reportedly set to produce and star in film adaptation of musical hit

Jake Gyllenhaal is reportedly set to produce and star in a film adaptation of the award-winning Fun Home.

The acclaimed Broadway musical follows protagonist Alison as she attempts to discover her sexual identity and unpack her relationship with her gay father, and became the first Broadway musical to feature a lesbian protagonist when it debuted in 2015.

Spider-Man actor Gyllenhaal is thought be playing the father Bruce Bechdel in the film, although details have yet to be announced.

Fun Home proved a critical hit on its original run, bagging seven Tony Awards in 2015 including Best Musical.

Sam Gold – the original director on the Broadway production – returns to direct the film, which itself was adapted from Alison Bechdel's memoir of the same name.

As well as starring in recent films Spider-Man: Far From Home and Velvet Buzzsaw, Gyllenhaal is set to appear on the London stage this year in Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George. He'll appear alongside Tony winner Annaleigh Ashford in a limited 12-week run at the Savoy Theatre from June.
