Fun and new skills school holiday wheelchair sports camp

More than 20 children with disabilities got the chance to try some new sports while meeting their idols at a school holiday camp in Newcastle on Friday.

Wheelchair Sports NSW/ACT hosted a Junior Wheelies School Holiday Camp at Broadmeadow for the first time, where kids with disabilities tried wheelchair tennis, Aussie rules, tennis and basketball.

Hunter Paralympic stars Rheed McCracken and Kurt Fearnley along with Games hopeful Luke Bailey were all at the camp to chat to and encourage the kids.

"To have such superstars of sport there is massive," Wheelchair Sports NSW/ACT head of sport David Krantz said. "Those guys actually got involved in sport because of wheelchair camps. There's very few sports that have that relationship between superstars and kids."

Mr Krantz said for some of the kids, it was their first time engaging in wheelchair sports, and they hoped to put on more Newcastle camps in the future.
