Fumito Ueda’s gen ATLAS finally revealed

Fumito Ueda’s next game finally has an official name: the title previously known as Project Robot is now called gen ATLAS, with the gameplay trailer revealed at the Summer Game Fest 2026.

The new trailer for gen ATLAS gave us the first look at the first new game from Ueda and genDESIGN since The Last Guardian. The game is a single-player open-world action-adventure developed by genDESIGN and published by Epic Games Publishing, and it is coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through the Epic Games Store.

The initial trailer, first shown at The Game Awards 2024, teased a lone character climbing a massive machine while a disaster closed in. The newest showcase gave us a mix of cinematic camera angles, worldbuilding, and some gameplay.

The main character awakens on a mysterious planet, surrounded by colossal architecture and seemingly dead robots. The open world is as vast as it is dead, and the main character needs to solve the mystery of this planet.

From the initial impression, it felt like Fumito Ueda tried to recapture the “lightning in a bottle” moment he had with Shadow of the Colossus, as both the solitary, melancholic feel and colossal surroundings and adversaries seem to be directly inspired by his most successful work.

Hopefully, there’s more to gen ATLAS than just a rehash of old ideas, and if there is one creative in the video game space that should be given the benefit of the doubt, it’s Fumito Ueda.

He has only led three games, and all of them left an indelible cultural footprint, especially his directorial debut, Ico, and its follow-up, Shadow of the Colossus.

Gen ATLAS is Ueda’s first project since he left Sony’s Japan Studio in 2011 and finished his work on The Last Guardian as a contractor.

The game currently has no set release date.
