Fuming Steven Gerrard slams Rangers stars as boss shuns 'the easy way out' in regretful nod to St Mirren horror show

Raging Steven Gerrard blasted his ragged Rangers side for producing their worst performance of the season after they were held by bottom dogs Hamilton Accies.

And the livid Light Blues boss insisted they deserved to lose to the Lanarkshire men after a dire display with man of the match Allan McGregor preventing them from going down to a first league defeat of the season.

Gerrard’s runaway Scottish Premiership leaders still remain well on course to lift the title despite Ross Callachan’s injury time strike cancelling out Brian Easton’s 80th minute own goal which looked set to hand Gers victory.

Rangers are 21 points clear of rivals and champions Celtic, who play the first of two games in hand on Wednesday, but Gerrard was fuming after the game.

The Ibrox boss - who revealed the club will appeal Kemar Roofe’s two-match SFA ban for his lunge on St Johnstone midfielder - Murray Davidson said: “I thought that was our worst performance of the season. Individual performances today weren’t good enough.

“It’s the easy way out to say it’s a bad day at the office. We had one of them at St Mirren and that’s the reason we can’t win a League Cup. Today was worse.

“Our keeper has been the busiest of both goalies and kept us in the game. He’s the reason we’re taking a point out of the game. It would have been a smash and grab from us.

“When the dust settles I’ll be quite relieved we’ve taken a point away today because I don’t think we deserved anything out of the game.

“Our performance wasn’t good enough - both sides of the game were not there today. We have been absolutely terrific up until this point but today we just weren’t at the races.

“Our support around the world watching that game will be disappointed today as well. That’s for me and the players to take responsibility for as that wasn’t the Rangers we’ve seen up until this point.

“My players have been brilliant all season but I’ve got no praise for them today. When we scored we thought we’d got away with one, we weren’t at the races today and I’ve got a lot to look through in that game.

“Today was not acceptable, today we haven’t given the fans a performance to be happy about. We’re still in a fantastic place but we need to learn from this.”

Cedric Itten was handed a rare start in attack with Roofe left on the bench and Gerrard revealed they will fight the former Anderlecht striker’s retrospective ban for a foul on Davidson during their win over St Johnstone at Ibrox.

The Light Blues have until 3pm today to contest the notice of complaint and Gerrard said: “We are going to appeal it. We have analyzed the situation, not just the tackle.”
