Fuming son of woman, 81, hit and killed by Sophie Wessex motorcade demands apology

The grieving son of an 81-year-old woman who died after being hit by Sophie Wessex's motorcade has demanded an apology from police.

Helen Holland was seriously injured when she was struck by a police motorbike at Earl's Court in west London earlier this month, with an eyewitness claiming at the time that she was "thrown 40 feet across the road".

Announcing her death, her son Martin told the BBC that she fought "for her life for nearly two weeks... but irreversible damage to her brain finally ended the battle".

Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, was said yesterday to be "deeply saddened" by the news of Helen's death, with a Palace statement sending their "deepest condolences and sympathies" to the family.

In a statement published by ITV News today, Martin Holland blasted police over the loss of his mum and said he is "angry" about what happened to her.

He said: "Police killed my mum.

"Mum Helen Holland died today after suffering multiple broken bones and massive internal injuries while she used the safe route of pedestrian crossing on West Cromwell Road at Nevern Road, Nr Warwick Road.

"She was fighting for her life for nearly two weeks while doctors and nurses repaired her broken body in intensive care but irreversible damage to her brain finally ended the battle today.

"We are very angry that someone so pure and kind was caught up in such a violent and unescapable situation."

It is understood Sophie will be in touch privately with Ms Holland's family.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has been investigating the incident and has taken CCTV from nearby properties for examination.

A spokesman for the watchdog said: "We can confirm a woman who was involved in a collision with a Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) motorcycle in Earl's Court on May 10 sadly died in hospital yesterday.

"Helen Holland, 81, was taken to hospital following the collision with a police motorcycle that was on escort duties on West Cromwell Road around 3.21 pm that afternoon.

"Our thoughts are with her family and friends following their loss. We began an independent investigation after we were informed by the force of the incident that night.
