Fuming mum ditches baby shower after in-laws don't let her eat and call her a 'walrus'

When you're expecting a baby, it is natural for your body to gain weight. Yet, one pregnant woman keeps being shamed by her mother-in-law for gaining dress sizes - and she is starting to feel fed up. Her understandable response comes after she first noticed her partner's mum giving her smaller portions during visits to her home. And the pair came to a head when the parent banned her from eating cake at her own baby shower.

What's more, the mother-in-law did not stop there. After trying to restrict her daughter-in-law's food, she went on to warn her against becoming a "large walrus," leading the woman to ditch her baby shower altogether.

The shocking story came to light after the expectant mum took to Reddit, wondering if she had acted unfairly. Having explained the situation to her partner, she claims he told he she needed to stop being so "easily offended." But commenters quickly reassured her this was not the case, given the extent of his mum's comments, which they said amounted to "verbal abuse."

Outlining why she fled her own party, in a post to "Am I the A*****," the woman began by explaining the event had been organised by her in-laws from the get-go.

She says that he husband "denied" her sister, when she offered to throw a baby shower on her sibling's behalf, instead allowing his own sister to organise the event.

"I got there and MIL was in charge of serving food to the guests," the mum-to be continued. "All that was served was cakes and juice. I got hungry from talking and I got up to eat some cake. The second I put my hand on the cake. MIL grabbed my arm and said that I'd gained enough weight already and that if 'I keep this' up her son will not be happy living with 'a large Walrus'."

Despite the woman's evident shock, she says her mother-in-law gave her a "sorry-not-sorry" look, prompting the mum to make her exit.

"Her daughter stopped me saying I can't leave mid party and embarrass her like that," she said. "I told her to tell her mom to leave if she wanted me to stay but she went off and said 'Are you crazy? She's my mom! you want me to kick her out infront of everybody?'. I turned around and kept walking."

But when she returned home, she found her husband did not support her decision, as she had wished. Instead, he "came home looking furious" and blasted her for her reaction over something he believed was "minor."

She responded: "I told him it wasn't minor in my opinion since she literally cut me off food and didn't let me eat when I was hungry."

But he said "that his mom meant well", telling her she must "get rid of this 'easily offended' mindset immedietly (sic) before I pass it down to our son".

Unable to resolve their argument, the pregnant mum the left to stay with her own family, and unsure if she was "overreacting", she turned to Reddit to ask "am I the a*****e?"

Well, people were quick to blast the husband and his family, with many struggling to understand how they justified their actions. Several also suggested the wife needed to end her relationship as a result of her partner's "toxic" behaviour.

One person wrote: "What kind of person hears that his pregnant wife was denied food, and not only thinks that it’s okay but that they need to apologize to the one denying them food?? That’s insane. This guy is a huge a****e and I really hope OP divorces him."

A second agreed: "You should re-evaluate your relationship with your husband. Is this what you want to continue to happen in the future." And someone else said the mum was "under-reacting," as commenters were in agreement her in-laws had all been "absolutely selfish, mean, entitled."
