Fuming Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson says his side were punished for not taking chances

Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson says his side lacked a cutting edge as they fell to a 1-0 defeat at home to St Mirren.

The Fir Park gaffer says Well were punished for not taking their chances while ruthless Saints netted with one clear opportunity.

And he pointed out that the Steelmen had 19 shots on goal, but without an end product.

He said: "It's just not happening for us at the moment. The boys gave lots of effort, we had lots of shots and possession, but we got punished for one mistake.

"It's not a coincidence that other teams seem to be in the right place at the right time, with a little bit of a thought process of what's going to happen.#

"They had one chance and they scored it, we had numerous chances and didn't take them, and that's as a team, not just the strikers.

"Overall I'm obviously very disappointed. It's just not happening at the moment, for whatever reason.

"The boys are giving 100 per cent in every game, they're working tirelessly, creating lots of chances, with lots of balls into the box - I think we had 19 shots - and you have to take them.

"They took their one opportunity and clung on for their lives, I think we have to credit them for that, and with the boys up front we tried to play the three forward players, but we lacked width today at times, I thought for the first time this season."

Robinson added: "We had Jake Hastie come on and make an impact, so maybe he's an option now for us because we didn't have any width for the last two games

"The three of them all want to play in the one position, I told them to make it work and we've worked on it, but we haven't quite made it work so far in the games that they've all played together, so we'll have to look at that.

"We weren't able to take the chances we created today and if you don't take chances you don't win football matches.

"The end product wasn't there, but there was plenty of stuff going into the box, plenty of balls through, we had numerous chances, but it's just not happening in those front areas.

"The boys know they can perform better with that final decision or pass, but ultimately I'll take the blame on it, because I put the team out."
