Fuming Edinburgh shopper notices Sainsbury's product promoting England team

An Edinburgh shopper was shocked to see a capital Sainsbury’s selling promotional bottles of Lucozade advertising a competition to win limited edition England footballs.

Scotland takes on England in a crucial Euro clash this evening [18 June], and the two teams are known for being ‘old enemies.’

The capital shopper spotted the England team themed Lucozades at Sainsbury's in Meadowbank and decided to alert the supermarket giant.

They said on Twitter: “Hi @sainsburys why are you advertising a competition for "Free England Footballs" and promoting the English national team in a supermarket in Edinburgh? Let alone on the day of a Scotland v England match?”

Sainsbury’s replied to the capital local on social media saying: “Hi Marek. Thanks for contacting us. I've passed this info on to the relevant teams to be reviewed internally. This will help us improve our products and services going forward. I hope you enjoy the game tonight. Angela.”

The disgruntled shopper told Edinburgh Live: “It wasn't the most egregious example of this sort of thing, but just another example of companies assuming Scotland is just "Greater England".

“This is frustrating at the best of times but particularly bad when we are playing against them!”

A spokesperson for Lucozade Sport commented: “We recognise this is the oldest rivalry in football and know how passionate fans are about this game. We’re working to fix this own goal as quickly as we can and wish both teams the best of luck for tonight’s game.”

Edinburgh Live contacted Sainsbury's for comment.
