A Fulton County sheriff’s deputy was killed in a barricade situation Tuesday in rural Avon, Illinois.
Deputy Troy Chisum, 39, was responding to a battery and disturbance call about 2 p.m. when someone fired multiple shots, Illinois State Police said. Chisum, a four-and-a-half year veteran of the Fulton County sheriff’s office, was killed in the shooting.
The suspect then barricaded himself somewhere in Avon, a town of less than 1000 people almost 50 miles west of Peoria. Multiple police agencies are assisting in the situation, with Illinois State Police taking the lead.
As of 5:15 a.m. Tuesday, the situation remains ongoing, Illinois State Police Sergeant Jacqueline Cepeda said. State police declined to provide any additional information.
“On behalf of the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, I would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Deputy Chisum,” Fulton County Sheriff Jeff Standard said. “Deputy Chisum dedicated his life to the service of his community. His legacy and sacrifice will forever be remembered.”
