Fullerton love-triangle feud ends with gunman shooting man, himself

Nov. 19--The fallout from an apparent love triangle spilled out onto Fullerton streets Wednesday afternoon when a man shot his estranged wife's lover, then turned the gun on himself as police closed in, authorities said.

The scene unfolded just before 2 p.m. at Harbor Boulevard and Ash Avenue among two men and a woman, said Fullerton police Sgt. Kathryn Hamel.

Investigators aren't yet sure why, but the trio ended up in a car together, with one of the men -- the woman's estranged husband -- sitting in the back seat.

The man in the back seat shot at his wife's lover, who was in the front passenger seat, then chased the man outside the car as he tried to get away, Hamel said.

As police arrived, the gunman turned the weapon on himself, the police sergeant said.

"We didn't even have a chance to stop our car," Hamel said. The gunman was pronounced dead and the victim was taken to a trauma center, where he was listed in critical condition.

The woman was uninjured, Hamel said.

The identities of the people involved were not immediately available.

There are no other suspects, and the shooting remains under investigation, Hamel said.
