Full year group and several classes at Sunderland school told to isolate after two Covid-19 cases

A Sunderland school has told an entire year group and several classes to self-isolate after two positive cases of coronavirus.

Kepier School in Houghton-le-Spring was informed on Sunday, October 11, and Monday (October 12), that a member of their Year 10 bubble and a member of their Year 9 bubble tested positive for Covid-19.

The school said as a "precautionary measure" all year 10 learners and four Year 9 coaching groups must self-isolate.

All other students should attend school while following government guidance.

In a statement, the school said they understand it's a "difficult time" but said it appreciated parent's support.

The statement said: "Unfortunately, last night, October 11, a member of our Year 10 bubble tested positive for coronavirus. Therefore, for precautionary measures all year 10 learners need to self-isolate.

"Unfortunately, this morning, October 12, a member of our Year 9 bubble has tested positive for coronavirus. Therefore, for precautionary measures learners in the following coaching groups need to self-isolate; 9.5 - Mr Garforth, 9.6 - Miss Murray, 9.7 - Mr Lightfoot and 9.8 - Mr Ruerup.

"Kepier will communicate further information later today.

"It is just those learners and not their families that must isolate. All parents/carers involved have been contacted.

"This means all other learners should attend as normal, whilst continuing to follow the government guidance on checking symptoms, isolation and using test and trace where appropriate.

"We understand this is a difficult time, and appreciate your support. Take care. Kepier."

The school previously announced on September 30 that one of their Football Academy staff members had tested positive for the virus.

The school said they were advised to send home their Football Academy learners who now must self-isolate for 14 days until they can return to school on October 15.

It's one of a number of schools across the region which has been affected by the pandemic.
