THE 39 members of Team Scotland’s athletics squad have been named for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
The team said the list of athletes brings together some of “Scotland’s biggest track and field stars and a host of exciting debutants for a home games” – which run in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2.
The announcement confirms the selection of a further 28 athletes to the squad following the preselection of Jake Wightman, Neil Gourley, and Megan Keith last year and eight para-athletes, including Paralympic champion and world record holder Ben Sandilands, last month.
The team includes 11 athletes who won medals at the British Championships in Birmingham last weekend.
Eilish McColgan and Laura Muir have joined the team, as well as long jumper Stephen Mackenzie, who set a new Scottish record of 8.15m last weekend to clinch the British title.
Team Scotland chef de mission Elinor Middlemiss said: “A huge congratulations to all the track and field athletes selected to compete in Glasgow this summer.
“It’s fantastic to see such a strong team named for the Games – a team which has a real mix of strength, depth and experience.
“Several of these athletes competed at Glasgow 2014 and will be able to impart that experience to the rest of the team.
“I’m confident that all selected will rise to the occasion of a home games and do Team Scotland proud.”

Glasgow stepped in to host its second Commonwealth Games in 12 years in 2024 after Melbourne pulled the plug amid rising costs.
Organisers have cut the number of sports to 10 and costs have fallen from £780 million for Birmingham 2022 to £160m.
There will still be more than 3000 athletes from 74 countries competing, including the largest programme of Para sports, with events fitted around existing infrastructure and an emphasis placed on sustainable transport.
Commonwealth Sport chief executive Katie Sadleir said earlier this week: “Glasgow is critical for us. It is the proof point for the movement. We have spent quite a bit of time resetting and reimagining the Games.
“That shows that the movement has got strength and adaptability.
“A real commitment we have to the Commonwealth movement is to take the games around the Commonwealth, and Glasgow is enabling that to happen by showing what we can do on a different size and scale.”
The 2030 Games will be held in Amdavad in India – when the number of sports will increase to 17 – while New Zealand and Nigeria are among the countries interested in being the subsequent hosts.
“There are five countries, some who have at this stage said that they don’t want to be public, others who have been quite public, that have expressed interest in 2034,” Sadlier said. “So that’s a really exciting place to be this far out.”
