Full statement from ambulance service after man is rescued from Avon River

A man was pulled out of the River Avon following a large-scale rescue this afternoon (August 22).

Police, firefighters and paramedics all joined forces in the huge search after a witness reported seeing a man struggling in the choppy waters.

The A4 Portway was closed in both directions while crews scrambled to reach the victim at around 12pm.

He was rescued from the water and rushed to hospital.

A South Western Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "SWASFT were called at 12.01 to Clifton Suspension Bridge Road after a patient was reported to be in the water.

"We sent a number of ambulance resources to the scene including the HART team (Hazardous Area Response Team) where the paramedics rescue was successful in treating the male patient and taking him on to hospital (by land ambulance) for further treatment."

The authority was unable to confirm the injured man's condition.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson said: "We joined the fire service to search for the man, who was pulled from the water.

"Ambulance are taking him to hospital."
