Full police statement after controlled explosion is carried out on 'suspicious package'

Police have released a full statement after a high-rise block of flats was evacuated and a 'controlled explosion' carried out.

Officers were called to Manvers Court, Manvers Street, Sneinton, just after 10.20am on Monday (February 24) to a report of a 'suspicious package'.

Residents have now been allowed back into their homes - and police released a statement with more information about the incident.

It read: "A cordon was put in place and residents were evacuated as a precaution.

"The army’s bomb disposal unit was called to the location and a controlled explosion was carried out, in line with the protocol on suspicious packages. The package was found not to be capable of causing injury.

"The cordon has been lifted and roads in the area have now reopened."

Chief Inspector Chris Sullivan, who oversaw the evacuation, said: “I would like to thank the community for their cooperation and understanding while we took the necessary safety precautions around the report made to us. The area is now returning to normal.”
