Police were called to reports that a body was found on the northbound carriageway of the M1.
A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said: "Emergency services were called shortly after 3.20am this morning (Wednesday, April 15) following reports a body had been found on the northbound carriageway of the M1, near to junction 31.
"Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances and the carriageway is closed to allow those enquiries to take place. It is expected to remain closed for some time.
"The investigation is in its early stages and no further information is available at this time."
The road is shut between junction 30 for the A616 (Worksop / Sheffield South) and junction 31 for the A57 Worksop Road (Sheffield / Worksop).
