Full list of school closures as snow and ice batters Britain amid weather warnings

Schools across the UK have closed today, Tuesday, 17 January, as bitter wintry conditions thrash the UK.

The full list of school closures has been outlined, due to the risk of dangerously icy conditions on the roads and pavements because of the snow and ice warnings.

With the snow battering many parts of the UK and freezing conditions on the return, many schools across the country are being forced to close following the yellow and amber Met Office warnings.

An amber warning for snow in the north of Scotland, between Aberdeen and Inverness, has been issued from 3pm today and midnight tonight.

Meanwhile a yellow warning of ice and snow is in place for much of the country for today and heading into tomorrow morning.

Therefore, many pupils in icy areas such as Cornwall, Scotland and Northern Ireland have been told to stay at home today.

A major health alert due to freezing temperatures has also been issued by the UK Health Security Agency due to the Arctic blast.

In Cornwall, forecasters say occasional rain and sleet will turn to snow and ice in heavier outbreaks - particularly over south Cornwall - from midnight until 9am today.

And WXCharts maps have forecast about eight inches of the white stuff to fall in Scotland in the next couple of days, as temperatures temperatures will feel as cold as -3C overnight in parts of Northern Ireland, the Met Office says.

With the snow expected to cause havoc on the roads, many schools have opted to close for the day.
