Full list of 'non essential' shops banned from opening during lockdown

As people in England prepare to go into lockdown for the second time, many shoppers have been left confused about which shops will and won't be open.

Supermarkets like Asda, Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, Sainsbury's, Morrisons and Co-Op are all classed as 'essential' shops, so will be allowed to stay open to the public for in-store shopping.

Garden centres, off-licenses and newsagents will also be permitted to stay open as they are considered 'essential' by the government.

However, clothes shops, footwear shops and electronics stores will all be forced to close, as they fall under the 'non essential' category.

According to the government website, the following shops will not be permitted to open during lockdown:

  • Clothing shops
  • Footwear shops
  • Electronics stores
  • Vehicle showrooms
  • Travel agents
  • Betting shops
  • Auction houses
  • Tailors
  • Tobacco shops
  • Vape shops

The following shops are classed as essential, and may be permitted to open:

  • Supermarkets
  • Newsagents
  • Off-licenses
  • Food shops
  • Garden centres

While non-essential retailers are closed for in-store customers, they are permitted to remain open for click and collect services, and for deliveries.

Non-essential shops in England will be permitted to remain open to the public until the new lockdown rules come into place at 00.01am on Thursday November 5.

Of course, if you want to head to the shops to get your non-essential items in before the lockdown comes into place, by all means, do.

But if you do, make sure you follow the relevant social distancing measures which have been put in place by the store you're visiting, and please, for the love of god don't stockpile. We know it's tempting, but there really, really is no need.

If we're all considerate to one another this time round, hopefully there will be plenty of everything for everyone. And remember, you don't use as much loo roll as you think.
