Full list of new locations where speed on green cameras could go live next

Seven new Speed on Green cameras could go live in Merseyside in the future, according to a list of all potential locations.

Merseyside was the first area to introduce the new technology when the cameras were activated in Sefton at the start of this year.

The original two cameras in Crosby and Maghull were later rolled out to areas in Liverpool and Wirral earlier this year.

And now Merseyside Police have confirmed that all the locations on the original list of 13 could eventually come online at some point.

What are speed on green cameras?

According to the RAC, they are a new type of camera aimed at catching drivers jumping red lights.

However, they also record the speed of vehicles travelling above the speed limit through the junction, regardless of the colour of the traffic light signal.

It is hoped their introduction will eventually result in a decrease in the number of people killed or seriously injured on Merseyside roads, a number that stood at 577 last year.

Speaking at the time of the cameras' launch in February Merseyside Police's Jayne Eaton, from the Safer Roads Unit, said they hoped they would influence driver behaviour.

She said: “It is vitally important that drivers drive at an appropriate speed [at traffic lights], one which enables them to stop safely should the traffic lights change or a pedestrian step into the road.

“By their very nature, junctions present an increased risk to drivers. However, we would prefer if the cameras were redundant and drivers drove responsibly and within the speed limits.”
