Full list of new fixed rates for Universal Credit and other benefits from April 2020

The new payment rates for Universal Credit and other benefits have been declared after MPs voted last night to bring an end to the decade-long freezes and caps.

From April 6, 2020, certain benefit caps and freezes will cease to exist and most payments will rise by 1.7 per cent.

State Pension will rise by 3.9 per cent thanks to the Government 'locking' the increase to earnings, prices, or 2.5 per cent, whichever is highest, the Mirror Online reports.

Since 2010, six separate benefit cuts have been brought in by the Government and as a result, benefit levels have not risen in line with inflation for at least four years.

But, MPs have voted to bring an end to the caps and freezes and the new rates have been approved.

Here's how your benefits will change from April 6, 2020. Some changes come into effect a few days earlier or later, and some are for people over the age of 25 only.

Freezes and caps are ending - with a 1.7 per cent rise (PA)

The new pension rates from April 2020

The State Pension will rise by a much bigger 3.9 per cent because it is protected by the Tories' 'triple lock' - which ensures it rises by earnings, prices, or 2.5 per cent, whichever is highest.

  • New State Pension (full rate):   £175.20 (from £168.60).
  • Old State Pension (category A or B):   £134.25 (from £129.20).

  • Bereavement Support Payment standard rate:   £2,500 lump sum, £100 a month for 18 months.
  • Bereavement Support Payment higher rate:   £3,500 lump sum, £350 a month for 18 months.
  • Benefit cap:   £20,000 a year, £23,000 in London, £13,400 for childless single adult households.
  • Universal Credit childcare costs allowance:   £646.35 per month.

Labour criticised the increases, saying they were still not sufficient.

Shadow Employment Minister Mike Amesbury said the rises "won't even buy a loaf of bread" in many shops, adding it was "just not good enough".

The Labour MP said the increases were "a token mild thaw at the tip of the iceberg of systematic and pernicious cuts to the benefits system".
