Full list of key workers in Wales who will be able to book coronavirus tests if showing symptoms

This is the list of all the people in Wales who will be able to book coronavirus tests next week, if they are showing Covid-19 symptoms.

On Thursday (April 23), the Welsh Government confirmed key workers in Wales who have symptoms of coronavirus will be able to book a test online from next week.

People will be able to choose between going to a drive-in test centre or having a home testing kit.

The Welsh Government said their web portal for testing has been built by Amazon and final checks are being carried out. The system "should" be available next week so people can book a slot at a testing site.

The list of jobs which are classed as “key workers” was released by the UK Government on March 20, and includes Wales.

Frontline health and social care staff, people involved in food production and delivery, and utility workers are included in the list.

The Welsh Government has previously confirmed the list is the same for Wales, and it has been used for a number of reasons including who can receive continued childcare during the pandemic.

On April 18, in its 'key (critical) workers testing policy: coronavirus (Covid-19)' document, which you can read here - the Welsh Government said there were 438,000 key workers in Wales: this includes 164,700 healthcare workers, and 9,900 police and prison staff.

The broad categories of key workers includes:

  • Health and social care workers
  • Public safety (emergency workers) and national security workers
  • Local and national government workers
  • Education and childcare workers
  • Food and other necessary goods
  • Transport workers
  • Utilities, communication and financial services workers
  • Key public service workers

The Welsh Government's key workers testing policy says: "At the discretion of medical directors, other workers may qualify as key workers for testing purposes."

A Welsh Government spokesman said on Thursday: "Our critical workers testing policy, published on April 19, set out how we are extending testing to critical workers in Wales including, for example, teachers, food delivery drivers and refuse collectors.

“Following a rapid review, we also published new plans to simplify and speed up the system and ensure more critical workers are tested daily in Wales.

"This includes military planning support and the development of an online testing portal. We are also working with Amazon Logistics to give people a choice between going to a drive-in test centre or having a home test kit.”

If showing symptoms, a person who lives in the same household as an asymptomatic critical worker will also be able to get tested.

The announcement came after England's Health Secretary Matt Hancock said essential workers in England will be able to book coronavirus tests online directly from Friday, while companies will be able to book them for employees from Thursday.

Mr Hancock said at the Downing Street press conference that "essential workers" in England and their families - based on criteria similar to those used for deciding who can still attend school - will be able to be tested.
