Full list of energy firm deadlines if you didn't submit meter reading on October 1

The energy price cap was increased yet again on October 1.

To ensure that billing is correct, it was advised that everyone should submit a meter reading for both their gas and electric energy accounts just as the new rates kick in.

Energy bills have been capped at £2,500 a year for a typical household from this weekend - up from an average of £1,971 a year. The government's Energy Price Guarantee came into play on Saturday, October 1.

The last time energy bills went up majorly was April 1. But the day before, March 31, Brits flocked to give meter readings in droves and many energy suppliers websites and apps crashed due to the influx of visitors.

To prevent the same happening again, various firms are now giving different deadlines for when to submit a reading from October 1, as long as they were taken on the day.

Meter reading deadlines for major energy firms

British Gas - October 14

Octopus Energy - October 8

Bulb - October 3

E.on - October 6

EDF - October 7

Scottish Power - October 5

Shell - October 31

How to take a meter reading

To send a meter reading, record the first five numbers shown from left to right to your energy supplier. You can do this over the phone, online or through an app.

Digital meters will show five numbers in black and white, followed by one or more red numbers. The red numbers can be ignored.
