Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that he will seek to trigger a snap general election after losing a crunch vote on Brexit.
Members trying to avoid a no-deal Brexit next month to seize control of the parliamentary agenda today.
They succeeded by 328 to 301 votes to suspend a Commons rule that says only the Government can create new laws.

MPs will now vote on the Brexit delay bill. If it passes, the vote on whether to hold an election will follow.
Before the vote, Mr Johnson vowed revenge on anyone who opposed him - or even who abstained - by withdrawing their whip and barring them from standing in a snap election.
Business Secretary Andrea Leadsom had given the rebels some hope when she said they "absolutely" had another chance to come on side.
But she was instantly slapped down by a Downing Street spokesman, who said: “The Chief Whip is speaking with those Tory MPs who did not vote with the Government this evening.
"They will have the whip removed.”
Minutes later, a spokesman for former Chancellor Philip Hammond confirmed he'd been ousted after a phonecall.
Meanwhile, Mr Johnson confirmed he would table plans to hold a general election on October 14 after No10 accused the rebel MPs of kneecapping hardline stance with the EU.
The Prime Minister's House of Commons majority is now in tatters.
Hours before the vote his majority was wiped out when Tory Remainer rebel Phillip Lee crossed the floor to join the Lib Dems.
Now, with 21 MPs moving from government to opposition, Boris Johnson has a majority of minus 43 and is deep in the constitutional quagmire of a minority government.
