Full list of 21 new Aldi stores opening in the UK this summer

Towns and cities are set to welcome a wave of new Aldi stores over the next 12 weeks as part of the chain's latest plans to conquer the UK grocery market.

The German discounter has revealed 21 new stores are coming - including in the capital.

It comes after Lidl revealed its first central London store - after reporting a 19% sales jump in just three months.

The new branch will appear on Tottenham Court Road, near Warren Street station, in summer 2020.

Aldi, the UK’s fifth largest supermarket, currently has 825 stores in the UK. It has plans to make this 846 by the end of 2019.

This will include a new store in Camden, London, Cardiff, Dundee and Borehamwood.

The supermarket, which has more than doubled its market share since 2011, has come a long way since opening its first UK store in Stechford, Birmingham, in 1990, stocking just 600 core items.

It wasn't until the recession that it became a force to be reckoned with, offering inflation-hit households a heavily discounted shopping basket compared to the likes of the Big Four.

In 2017, the chain spoke of its target to reach 1,000 stores by 2022. Today, it's on track for 1,200.

"If you look at the population, we think not only could we have a store in every town and city, but for every 25,000 to 30,000 people," Matthew Barnes, the UK and Ireland chief executive of the German grocer, said.

This week, the grocer also announced plans to revamp seven stores to improve convenience for shoppers.
