Full Leeds United U23s team news as Joe Gelhardt faces competition and Luke Ayling returns to XI

Leeds United hosted their obligatory pre-match press conference on Monday morning ahead of Tuesday night's first-team affair with Crystal Palace.

In between, sits the small matter of an U23 fixture between Leeds United and Manchester City at the Academy Stadium, just across the snow-topped Pennines.

Marcelo Bielsa stated in the opening exchanges of Monday's media briefing that Patrick Bamford and Luke Ayling would continue their comeback from injury by appearing in this evening's U23 fixture.

He did not reveal how many minutes each would play, although it is expected both will be on managed minutes - a Leeds practice which limits the exposure to competitive football for players returning from injury.

Earlier this season, Junior Firpo made his comeback from injury with a 30-minute first-half run-out against Arsenal U23.

Bamford and Ayling both make the starting XI tonight.

While it is quite obvious this is predominantly an exercise in gaining match sharpness for Bamford, it is interesting to see the England centre-forward donning the No. 9 shirt normally synonymous with Joe Gelhardt in the U23s.

Based on the latter's recent displays, it may not be too long before the pair are competing for the same spot in the first-team.

Nevertheless, tonight U23s boss Mark Jackson has gone with the standard 4-1-4-1 formation with Kristoffer Klaesson in goal.

Stuart McKinstry and Sam Greenwood dropped out of the first-team matchday squad on Saturday as Raphinha and Rodrigo made a return.

The U23 duo all make an appearance in Jackson's squad for tonight's outing.

Crysencio Summerville has been absent from both U23 and first-team fixtures lately, following his debut with the Dutch U21 side during November's international break.

He comes back into the squad this evening.

Leeds United U23s XI: Klaesson, Ayling, Hjelde, Jenkins, Kenneh, Moore, Bate, Summerville, Bamford, Greenwood (c), McKinstry

Subs: Van den Heuvel, McCarron, Cresswell, Gelhardt, Gray
