Full extent of Liverpool's defensive injury crisis as Joe Gomez becomes latest casualty

Jurgen Klopp's hopes of defending Liverpool's Premier League crown has taken another blow with the news that Joe Gomez has suffered an injury.

There are major concerns the Reds centre-back - who has been injured on England duty - is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines, leaving Liverpool in the lurch.

Virgil van Dijk was Liverpool's first major defensive casualty this season after the Dutchman ruptured his ACL in the Merseyside derby.

The £75million defender has since had surgery on his knee, which Liverpool say went well, but there is no time frame on when he will return and could be out for the season.

Liverpool's second defensive casualty saw Fabinho - who has been filling in for Van Dijk at the back - suffer a thigh strain in the Champions League.

One positive is that the Brazilian is expected back later this month.

Trent Alexander-Arnold hobbled off in the second half of Liverpool's 1-1 draw with Manchester City last time out.

The right-back is currently being assessed for a hamstring injury, and was forced to miss the international break as a result.

And finally Gomez, who was one of two recognised centre-backs alongside Joel Matip still fit at Liverpool, is out of action for the foreseeable.

Klopp will now be forced to call upon Nat Phillips, who has been drafted into the first team in recent weeks, as well as Rhys Williams to pick up the slack.
