Full extent of Daniel Dubois injury confirmed as he faces surgery after Joe Joyce loss

Daniel Dubois suffered a fractured eye socket in his 10-round loss to Joe Joyce.

Dubois was taken to hospital immediately after quitting in his Battle of Britain because he could not see out of his swollen left eye.

Scans revealed he suffered a fractured orbital bone and nerve damage.

Dubois, 23, spent the night at Moorfields Eye Hospital and will see a specialist on Monday to discover if he needs surgery to repair his eye socket.

Dubois’ left eye began to swell after the early rounds because of Joyce’s accuracy with his jab and by the 10th he could barely see out of it.

He went down on one knee after taking yet another jab from Joyce and allowed referee Ian John-Lewis to count him out.

The loss at Church House in Westminster was his first pro defeat in 16 fights and he must rebuild his career when he is fit enough to return to the ring.

Dubois tried to explain his actions to BT Sport before going to hospital.

“He caught me with another jab to the eye,” he said.

“I could hardly see out of it. I can’t explain it. I’m a tough guy and I will come again.”

Dubois has been roundly criticised for quitting and former WBA heavyweight champ David Haye said: “I was very unhappy with the way he took a knee. I’d rather get knocked spark out.”

Two-weight world champion Carl Frampton, who summarised on the fight with Haye for BT Sport, also claimed he would never give up in a fight.

“I think he quit, I have to be brutally honest,” he told BT Sport. “His eye was closed, but I’d get dragged out of the ring, I wouldn’t take a knee.”

Dillian Whyte mocked Dubois and called him a “coward”.

“Man’s out here quitting in mid-fight,” he said on Instagram. “They were saying they wanna fight me and they were gonna knock me out.

“One thing with me, no quit, straight warrior. If I’m losing, I’m getting knocked out. Straight warrior, straight warrior. And these cowards wanna mention me.”
