Full details of the Queen's funeral as date and schedule officially confirmed

The royal family has shared details on the upcoming funeral of the Queen. Following a period of national mourning, Queen Elizabeth II's funeral will take place on Monday, September 19, 2022.

The funeral will be a morning service, beginning at 11am, and will be held at Westminster Abbey. Prior to the funeral day - which will be a national bank holiday in the UK - the Queen will lie in state in Westminster Hall for four days so members of the public can pay their respects.

The Queen's funeral is the first state funeral for more than 50 years and will be the first royal funeral to be held at the Abbey since King George II was laid to rest back in 1760. It's understood the Queen took an active role in planning proceedings and personally chose Westminster Abbey as the church for her funeral.

In an announcement on the Westminster Abbey website, a spokesperson said: "Buckingham Palace has announced that the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II will be at Westminster Abbey at 11am on Monday, 19 September. The last royal funeral to be held at the Abbey was King George II in 1760.

"The Dean of Westminster, Dr David Hoyle, said: 'The church in which she was married and in which her coronation took place, the Abbey was witness to promises that defined the life of our faithful and devoted Queen. In deep gratitude and in deep sorrow we will give thanks to God for the service she gave to God, nation and commonwealth. We pray now, and in the days ahead, for our new King and for his family. God save the King.'"
