Full council statement after mudslide in Mansfield as residents able to return home

Residents who were evacuated from their homes on Christmas Eve after a mudslide in their street will be able to be back at home for Christmas.

Mansfield District Council confirmed around 4pm on Thursday (December 24) the households affected by the second mudslide this year at Bank End Close - the former Berry Hill Quarry - would be able to return to their homes immediately.

A police helicopter was called out to the Mansfield street in addition to paramedics, firefighters, police officers and council employees after the incident was reported at 11.40pm yesterday.

The council said it was working with the police and fire service at the scene after four properties were evacuated.

But now with the area now cleared, residents will be able to return home just in time for Christmas to get back underway.

A spokesperson for the council said: “We are pleased to confirm that the debris has been cleared at the rear of the properties in Bank End close.

“Our geotechnical consultants have approved that residents are able to return to their homes with immediate effect.

“We have been advised that there may be a small level of spoiling that may continue to fall in the area.

“There is confidence that this small amount of earth would fall in the existing buffer zone. Some plant may remain on site and a further inspection will be done in the coming days.

“Residents are advised to remain vigilant and if they have any concerns please call 01623 463050 immediately.”

It comes after a mudslide on November 7 2019, also in Bank End Close, meant 35 homes had to be evacuated.
