Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Arrowe Park Hospital, confirmed that a 78-year-old man had died after testing positive for COVID-19.
Yesterday the total number of confirmed cases of the virus across the country stood at 6,650 - with 335 deaths of those who have tested positive.
According to Public Health England, the number of confirmed cases of the virus across Merseyside have jumped up - although in reality the numbers of those infected is likely to be much higher than these figures because of a lack of testing.
Liverpool
The latest Public Health England statistics, published yesterday show that confirmed cases of coronavirus in Liverpool have now jumped to 35 in total.
Wirral
In Wirral, where the first Merseyside death occured yesterday, the overall number of confirmed cases has risen to 12.
Sefton
In the borough of Sefton, there were 10 confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of yesterday.
St Helens
The latest data shows that there are 6 confirmed cases in the St Helens area.
Knowsley
The Knowsley borough has seen five confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of yesterday.
Halton
Also within the Liverpool City Region, there are currently 7 confirmed cases of the virus.
