Fulham target Swansea City boss Steve Cooper as Jonathan Woodgate confirms Bournemouth departure

Fulham are pushing to strike a deal to appoint Swansea City boss Steve Cooper as their new manager.

The Cottagers are expected to see Scott Parker depart for Bournemouth in the near future.

It comes after Jonathan Woodgate confirmed he would be leaving the Cherries this summer.

Writing on Instagram, Woodgate said: "My time at @officialafcb will come to an end this week, and I’d like to thank everyone connected with the club for making me so welcome during my short time there.

“It was a real experience for me personally and I can’t thank the staff who were absolutely incredible and the people of the town enough for the support they gave me.

“I’d also like to thank the players for all their hard work. They were a great group to work with and it was gutting how the season ended for us all. They deserved better than how it ended at Brentford.

“Disappointment aside, I’ll look back on my time there as a privilege to work for such a special football club and I wish #AFCB every success for the future #UTC.”

Cooper had been strongly linked with the Crystal Palace role and was the favourite with bookmakers on Sunday to take charge at Selhurst Park.

The Eagles have been on the hunt for a new boss since confirming Roy Hodgson would leave the club following the conclusion of the 2020/21 campaign.

They came close to making Lucien Favre their new manager before a deal fell through at the 11th hour while others including Nuno Espirito Santo, Frank Lampard, Eddie Howe and Sean Dyche have all been listed as potential suitors.

Cooper had been interviewed by Palace, although the situation at Fulham became clearer as Woodgate's impending exit paved the way for Parker to move to the south coast of England.

Swansea would receive a compensation fee for Cooper - who has one year left to run on his contract with the club.

Losing Cooper would serve as a major blow for the Swans who kick-start their 2021/22 Championship campaign at Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, August 7.

The squad are expected to return to their Fairwood training complex on Saturday to begin their pre-season campaign. Contingency plans are being made to ensure a replacement for Cooper can be found should the man who led the Swans into the play-offs in each of the last two seasons depart.

Lincoln City boss Michael Appleton - who was a contender for the role after Graham Potter's departure in 2019 - is among the front runners while former Under-23s coach Cameron Toshack has been mooted as a potential replacement should Cooper leave.
