Fulham striker Mitrovic speechless after firing Serbia to 2022 World Cup at expense of Portugal

Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic was left speechless after he scored a dramatic late winner against Portugal on Sunday night to book Serbia a place at next year’s World Cup.

Portugal, who will now have to navigate the play-offs, needed a draw at home to secure a place in Qatar and they looked set to earn it when Renato Sanches scored inside two minutes.

Dusan Tadic equalised before half-time, though, and then substitute Mitrovic scored in the dying minutes to ensure Serbia leapfrogged Portugal to top Group A.

“I don’t know where to start — I have no words to describe this,” said Mitrovic.

“It is joy and pride all mixed together. It’s an incredible feeling. We’re overjoyed for ourselves and for the whole nation. We have brought so much happiness.

“Both myself and the team believed in the coach, we played with great confidence.

“We have created something amazing. I don’t remember it being like this in the national team, and I’ve been here for a long time. It is up to us to maintain this.

“This team is ready for miracles. We are going to Qatar to play football, to play for each other.”
